Haiti Mission
Canadian Youth Inspired
A ten-year-old child I visited in the most deplorable human conditions in the slums of Haiti said to me, "When I wake up in the morning, I give thanks to God for three things. I give thanks for my lungs so that I breathe and live another day. I give thanks for my legs so that I can run to look for work or beg for food, and I give thanks for my mind so I can dream of a better day."

Haiti is an impoverished country. Everywhere you look there is poverty. Some people, like these, are fortunate to have a stone home. They are built on top of each other, high up in the air. A family would live in a cement square home roughly 20 feet by 15 feet. No running water and if they have electricity, it would be a single bulb for the house.
These boys are very fortunate to live in the comfort of Michael's orphanage, St Joseph's. Michael provides them with a comfortable 3 story home with running water, electricity, food and an education.
Many children in Haiti are left orphaned because of the extreme poverty. Michael rescues them and provides these special needs kids all that they require in his Broken Wings Mission.
No matter how severe their disability, Michael offers these children a safe and comfortable home with medical attention and lots of love.
Every child is provided with a bed. They no longer sleeping on dirt ground.
From infant to older teen, each child has a comfortable place to sleep.
As poor as these conditions appear, this home is much better the slums. Michael cares for hundreds of families, taking them out of the slums and placing them in homes where they are protected from the elements.
Michael provides a fine education for these kids. He even offers programs in the Arts and St. Joseph's has a phenomenal dance program.
There are many areas of slums in Haiti. The most impoverished slums are difficult to enter. I cannot provide photos of these slums because when I entered, the conditions were so traumatizing, I was unable to take pictures.
I felt honoured to spend the day with this family. Although the heat is stifling and the smells of the area are terrible, one is comforted by these beautiful people and their hospitality.
When Michael rescues these people from the slums, these kind of homes built of concrete, roughly 25 feet by 15 feet becomes a paradise for a family.
Even when you end up in a half decent home, you may be flooded out with a constant flow of dirty water and sewage.
