Frank VoltermanFrank jumped out of his craft into three feet of water and ran to the beach behind his Corporal. Upon reaching the beach, they were hit with a mortar shell that knocked him out. He fractured his ankle, got a piece of shrapnel in his neck, and a large gash in his upper left arm at the shoulder. When he awakened a few seconds later, he saw his Corporal dead. Frank got up and ran to the sea wall at the slope, but they were besieged by German snipers and artillery from the higher ground, and could go no further. A tank finally arrived, got stuck in the beach, backed up and then started firing at German positions. This slowed down the German firepower, but it did not stop it... |
